Well.I drove it around today with the lower PNW temps, and got a whiff of coolant smell when the heater got warm. We use a vent mounted iPhone holder for when we are using Maps and such. The adapter will start/stop play of the iPhone with the Van's ignition and charges the phone. ![]() Make sure its a real APPLE adapter, the knock offs don't pass audio. The Monsoon Single DIN is a great radio, easy to operate, cheap on ebay (about $50) matches the van interior perfectly and has a CD changer port which we use an iPhone adapter from Amazon like this which provides a powered connection to our iPhones prices on these adapters range from $20-50 so shop around and watch that you get the right connector for the head unit (blue or white, they are different) You also need to get the adapter with the older 30pin and then get a 30-pin to lightning adapter (MD824AM/A) because the ones the come with Lightning only charge the phone and you have to use the headphone jack for audio. A 2-DIN Kenwood DDX6702s with carplay in my daily driver Audi A4 which is really nice yet in our van I have a stock VW Monsoon radio from our Passat (which I ended up putting in a 2-DIN in the passat as well). Pretty much a smartphone and a bluetooth radio will be suffice for what most people need. It's not like the double din is some must have thing. Posted: Tue 10:22 pm Post subject: Re: Double DIN Routing the wiring for the backup camera probably requires gutting the interior anyway, so I could just combine those tasks in future phases. ![]() Since this is more work than I had planned at these initial stages of the build, I'll just swap in the single DIN Kenwood from my Vanagon, and keep the double for another day when I'm ready to pull the dash. That's pretty much what I had in mind, even with no prior idea what the brace looked like. It's helpful to see what mods I'll need to make. Posted: Tue 9:59 am Post subject: Re: Double DIN Posted: Tue 9:31 am Post subject: Re: Double DIN ![]() Apparently there is a version of crashbar which allows room for a 2-DIN, if you can find the other version of crashbar you could retro-fit it into your van. The bottom line is that some of our vans (like my 01 MV weekender) have a crash bar in the dash that would have to be cut to install a 2-DIN stereo. There is some discussion on this over at Vortex forum. I would like to install a double DIN touchscreen head unit in our new '01 EV, but most of those DD installs I've seen have been on vans with the automatic climate control dashes.
